Peach Aphid (Myzus persicae) on Tobacco

The virus is transmitted by mechanical inoculation of plant sap and by contact between plants during cultural processes, by seeds, and by insect species with some biting-chewing mouthparts. In tobacco production areas, the disease is mostly spread by aphids. There are many breeds of the agent.

TMV is found systemically in the roots, stems and leaves of the host. It can also be found on the outer surface of the seed, in the seed coat and rarely in the seed endosperm. TMV is a stable virus and can maintain its ability to cause disease for a long time in diseased plant residues, cigarettes and tobacco, weeds, contaminated soils.

Although the symptoms of the disease differ depending on the race of the agent, the general symptom is discoloration on the leaves. This color change is in the form of light green, yellow and dark green mosaic. The dark green areas on the leaf develop faster than the light green areas and these areas take on a thicker and fluffy appearance. As a result, curling and deformations occur in the leaves.

In infections caused by some strains of the virus, necrotic spots occur on the leaves. These spots cause the leaves to dry out in the future. Growth retardation and stunting are observed in early infected plants. Shrinkage and deformation occur in the top leaves.

The economic importance of the disease varies according to the time of infection. As a result of the infection of young plants, it was determined that the product loss reached 50%. In late infections, product loss is around 8%.

TMV is a common disease agent in all vegetable fields in our country.

Important hosts of TMV include tobacco, tomato, pepper, eggplant, beans, soybean, garlic, cowpea, celery, potato, some ornamental plants and weeds.
