2016 Denizli Tobacco Agriculture Report
Contract Information: 11.330 producers in Denizli signed contracts with companies to produce 19.502.000 kg of tobacco for the 2016 production year. Tobacco was planted on an area of 216,850 decares.
In addition to contracted tobacco production, it has been observed that there are also non-contracted tobacco producers as a result of the observations made in the field studies. There are eight tobacco production contracts companies in our province. (Sunel, TTL, Alliance One, Socotab, Öz-Ege, Prestij, 4B Tobacco and Protabak tobacco companies)
55 042 manufacturers in Turkey in 2016 with 885 177 hectares in 75,995,678 kg. and in the Aegean Region, with 36,555 producers, 53,389,316 kg of tobacco production contracts were made on an area of 649,510 decares.
In 2015, approximately 210 million TL was paid to producers against 15 thousand tons of tobacco production with an average price of 14 TL / Kg.
Production: tobacco production in Turkey No. 4733 dated 3/1/2002 and the Tobacco and Alcohol Market Regulatory Authority of the Law on the Organization and Duties are performed based on a contract written according to Article 6.
Contracted commercial companies are audited by the Tobacco and Alcohol Market Regulatory Authority (TAPDK). The Authority is always authorized to inspect the buyer's tobacco buying places, processing facilities and warehouses and the records that must be kept as per the legislation. It is obligatory to provide all kinds of information and documents requested by the Authority for audit purposes.
Tobacco planting in our city started in April and was completed in June. From April to the 15th of May, tobacco, which was planted due to dry and above-season temperatures, reached the number of leaves below their normal growth. Due to the heat and arid conditions, flowering was early in tobacco. Tobacco slaughter in our region was completed at the end of September. The yield is expected to be less than last year and at an estimated 14 thousand tons.
Tobacco is produced in 12 districts of Denizli. Different diseases and pests occur every year in tobacco production areas depending on rainfall and temperature conditions. In 2016, spotted wilt virus disease caused by tobacco thrips, mostly at Tavas and Kale production points, was effective on an area of approximately 7-8 thousand decares. The hot and dry weather from April to mid-May increased the growth and density of tobacco thrips. Spotted wilt virus disease was more common in tobacco of producers who delayed in the fight against tobacco thrips after tobacco planting. In addition, the limited number of different drugs to be used against tobacco thrips in organic tobacco production areas affected organic tobacco producers as well. In these affected areas, there were losses between 30-50% in terms of efficiency and quality.
Tobacco production in Denizli is made on an area of 19.15 decares per household. Although the yield per decare varies between 70-120 kg, the average decare yield of 85 kg and the production cost of 1 kg of tobacco (assuming that all goods and services are purchased) can be accepted as 14.89 TL for 2016.
Pricing: After the determination of the quality of the tobacco in November and December 2016, tobacco prices will be formed.
8 companies have signed tobacco production contracts in Denizli. Pricing is made over 7 types.
There may be changes in the type of prices according to the companies. With the kind-price scale of 17.0 TL for the 1st level and 4.30-6.25 TL for the 7th level, tobacco purchasing activities are expected to start in January 2017 and to be completed by the end of the month. It is estimated that an average price of 17 TL / Kg will be realized. Tobacco companies constantly check the production areas, yield and quality of the producers they have contracted with. They give advances according to the production and quality status. They provided all kinds of technical support to their contracted producers.
Production Finance: Tobacco companies cannot give up the Denizli region. Tobacco produced in 12 districts, especially Tavas, Kale, Güney, Buldan, and Bekilli, are in demand. Çalıköy, Sofular, Ebecik, Nikfer, Karaköy, Alaattin are the main production points. The Denizli Region tobacco production cost for 2016 is as follows.

Tobacco, which will contribute 238 million TL to Denizli's economy with its estimated production amount and the price to be realized, ranks 3rd after grape and wheat according to the gross production values of the province. Tobacco production in Denizli is decreasing every year. On the basis of producers, it decreased to 15 thousand in 2013, 12 thousand in 2014 and 11 thousand in 2015. It is difficult to find new producers in labor-intensive tobacco production. In a field study conducted in our city, it was determined that 68% of tobacco producers are over 50 years old.
