Fertilization in Tobacco

Despite the shortness of the field circuit, the tobacco plant is a plant that needs fertilization in terms of the amount of nutrients it removes from the soil. A fertilizer mixture is recommended according to the characteristics of each type of soil, even each field, because of the fear of excessive growth, coarsening of leaves, difficulty in drying and decrease in quality as a result of random use of organic or especially chemical fertilizers. Our quality tobaccos are grown under conditions that limit growth and development, by planting densely in medium-strength fields and with the effect of summer drought. Fertilizer should be given very carefully to the soils where high quality Turkish tobacco is grown.

In this respect, it would be appropriate to divide our tobaccos into two categories in terms of fertilizer needs.

1- Tobaccos with large or medium leaves planted at wide distances, high nicotine and strong (normal) growing and developing (Puro, Tömbeki, Virginia, Burley, Hasankeyf, Trabzon, etc.) prefer strong soils, there is no harm in fertilizing them abundantly.

2- Quality tobacco with medium or small leaves planted at narrow distances, growing under low nicotine conditions and restricting growth and development (Samsun, Basmas- Izmir, G.Hacikoy -Bafra, Marmara Region tobaccos, etc.) they need a fertilization. As a result of excessive fertilization / irrigation, newly planted tobacco plants grow rapidly and their leaves grow larger. Tobacco cannot reach its crushing maturity. Since the tobacco plants that cannot find enough water will start to wilt and wilt due to the pressure of the heat, it may be necessary to irrigate the tobacco fields where excessive fertilizer is given. The chemical and physical values of irrigated tobacco diverge from the quality standards required by the market, which are sought in cigarette blends.

The nutritional need of tobacco is met by fertilizing the soil with organic or chemical fertilizers.

Organic (Farm) Fertilizers: Farm fertilizers, on the one hand, store some of the substances necessary for the development of plants, on the other hand, optimize the structure of the soil for agriculture. It is accepted that there are N (1.5-2%), P (1.5%), K (1.5-3%) nutrient ratios in dry farm manure.

Quality tobaccos 1-1.25 tons / decare of mature farm manure, 2-3 tons / decare fertilizer is used for large-leaved and high nicotine tobacco. Farm manure improves the soil structure and increases the amount of organic matter. Tobacco planting should not be done in the first year in fields where farm manure is applied abundantly. Problems of weed and soil pests may occur in fields where farm manure is applied as wet. Additional chemical fertilizers should be given as nutrients in tobacco fields where farm manure is applied.

Chemical Fertilizers: According to the type of plant nutrients in chemical fertilizers;

1. Nitrogenous fertilizers

2. Phosphorus fertilizers

3.Potassium fertilizers

4. It is classified as compound fertilizers. The most commonly used minerals in tobacco agriculture are nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Fertilizers containing these three minerals are widely used.

In the fields where tobacco is planted in the Aegean Region, alternation should be applied in order to prevent disease, pest and weed density. 1-2 weeks before planting, 15-20 kg / decare 15-15-15 + GOLD / SUPER as base fertilizer in field preparation should be given . During planting, some leonardite sourced humic acid, potassium sulphate, magnesium sulphate   should be mixed with fertilizers. It is desirable that İzmir origin tobacco has low nicotine. Excess nitrogen will reduce the quality of Izmir Origin tobacco and increase the nicotine ratio. It is necessary to avoid chlorinated fertilizers as they spoil the drinking properties. F viable market and with less loss due to incorrect fertilizer s igara given tobacco blends.

If growth and development retardation is observed during the hoeing period of tobaccos, 250-300 grams / 100 liters of water from the leaf crystal form (powder) and Gübretaş Company's {8.16.24+ (2MgO)} plant nutrient containing nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and magnesium for Aegean Region tobaccos product can be used. Magnesium increases "leaf flammability", which is one of the important quality criteria in tobacco. Again, the same product {8.16.24+ (2MgO)} is given 4-5 kg with lifewater (1 ton water) during the planting period.

Amounts of nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium as the pure substance required to be given to the tobacco plant according to the soil analysis results by regions are given in the table below.
